An Alternative Ending

After sleeping under the stars for 978 days and travelling the entire length of the equator several times, he packed his bike into a neat little box and boarded a flight back to his home country. He was a borne adventurer, a rough man with a steady, firm, handshake and worn out hands that would regularly get him out of trouble in his travels. He arrived at the airport with time to spare, checked…

Murders in Mexico

I feel a pretty deep connection to Holger Franz Hagenbusch. I met him on a beatiful morning on the mountain pass between Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl. I recognized him instantly as a fellow bike traveller. I had looked exactly like he looked in december 2010 when I had climbed that very road to Paso de Cortés with my bike, on my way to Chiapas and eventually Cancún, just like him.

Skipping most…

We have always needed to work to get what we want, that isn’t new. From time long past, the work we required to do involved a certain amount of physical activity, we traded abilities for goods, goods for other goods or daughters for land, all of them required hard work. Even after currency was implemented as a medium of exchange, after Plato’s Akademia came into being (the birth of the geek who…

…Fear. It is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot…

Yelapa is a very small fishing/mountain beach town. It is cramped in between the mountains and the ocean, and so far away from it all thato credit cards are kind of useless and it’s streets aren’t wide enough for cars, i.e., perfect for walking. You can drive there, but only on a beat up 4wd track through the mountains; the best way to get there is on a boat (water-taxi) from the town of Boca de Tomatlán, 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta on a classic folksy bus that you can catch from the centro.

Why?

Mountaineering, if that’s what you mean… is rather useless. What drives a man to climb a mountain is a psychosis of sorts, an instinct of evasion against common life and to a point, oneself. But it is an instinct, and as such it’s partially blind.

Memories of my time in Puerto Vallarta. Sunsets, sand, sorrow and a sinking feeling. I was there for eight months, but it felt like a slow moving trip. Memories of my time in Puerto Vallarta.
